The Passionate
Off the coast of Göteborg, Sweden, hidden among an archipelago of deep blue water and ancient granite rocks, lies Asperö. Home to just 400 residents, the small island feels worlds apart from the city visible across the bay. Cars are prohibited, the ferry is the only connection to the mainland, and life unfolds at a noticeably slower pace.
Stepping aboard the small passenger ferry that serves the islands, the transition begins almost immediately. The gentle wash of the waves against the hull, the scent of salt carried on the wind, and the steady hum of the engine create a rhythm that feels both calmingly familiar. The short crossing is enough to shift your attention away from schedules and screens and towards the landscape itself.
For Malou Palmqvist, this journey is simply part of everyday life. A former fashion designer turned sculptor, Malou lives on Asperö with her family, having chosen a life shaped by proximity to nature rather than proximity to the city. From her home overlooking the bay, she works from a light-filled atelier adjacent to her bedroom, where clay, sketches, and unfinished forms quietly occupy the space between daily life and artistic practice.
"It is quite special to live here, because you kind of become addicted to nature. I wanted the closeness to the sea and the forest – another life." she says.
The decision to move to Asperö was driven by a desire for something fundamentally different. While Göteborg remains only a short ferry ride away, island life offers another perspective entirely. A life where the sea, the forest, and the changing weather become constant companions.
"My sculptures are very much about collapse and balance, and about what we are trying to find in life, I think."

On Asperö, nature is not something visited on weekends. It is woven into everyday routines. The tide, the wind, the changing light, and the seasons shape the experience of living there. The island demands a different awareness of time, one that values presence over urgency.
That same awareness can be felt in Malou's sculptures. Working primarily in ceramics, she creates pieces that appear both fragile and grounded, balanced between tension and stability. The themes she explores in her work feel inseparable from the environment around her. Living on an island means constantly witnessing nature's delicate contrasts – the meeting of land and sea, exposure and shelter, stillness and movement. In many ways, her sculptures mirror those same relationships.
Ceramics itself is a medium that rewards patience. It cannot be rushed. Every stage of the process demands attention, from shaping the clay by hand to waiting for it to dry, bring the pieces to her next-door neighbour to fire and transform. The material carries its own unpredictability, requiring both control and acceptance.
"Working with ceramics is like being in a meditative state." says Malou.
